Douay, a town in Flanders (now Douai in France),
was the home of Catholic exiles from England. Its name was pronounced in Flemish as if it contained the sound of ow in now:
Dow-ay, a pronunciation still applied to the Douay Bible by old English Catholic families.

The Roman Catholic Church in England and in the United States uses a version which differs from the Douay in that it reads:
