Lyrically, the story plays out more directly.<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>Literally Speaking<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">The song title was fairly straightforward. \u201cCrimson\u201d is associated with the color red, a hue also associated with love, while \u201cClover\u201d is a specific species of flower. Love is blossoming.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Written by Tommy James and The Shondells\u2019 then-drummer Peter Lucia Jr., both writers had different origins for the meaning of the title. Lucia Jr. said \u201cCrimson\u201d was based on his Morristown, New Jersey hometown high school football team, The Crimson, while crimson, which is associated with the color red, was James\u2019 favorite color, and the combination with \u201cClover\u201d popped into his head.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">\u201cThey were just two of my favorite words that came together,\u201d said James. \u201cActually, it was one morning as I was getting up out of bed, and it just came to me, those two words, and it sounded so poetic. I had no idea what it meant, or if it meant anything. \u2026 Mike Vale (Shondells bassist) and I actually wrote another song called \u2018Crimson and Clover,\u2019 and it just wasn\u2019t quite there. I ended up writing \u2018Crimson and Clover\u2019 with my drummer, Pete Lucia, who has since passed away.\u201d<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Lucia Jr. passed away at the age of 39 in 1987 after suffering a heart attack on a golf course in Van Nuys, California. \u201cPete was the best friend I had during the past 21 years,\u201d said James. \u201cHis death was a total shock, and I don\u2019t think I\u2019ve ever hurt so bad or so deep in my entire life.\u201d<\/p>\n<h4 style=\"text-align: left;\"><strong>The Making of the Song<\/strong><\/h4>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">For some time, it was said that Bo Gentry had ghostwritten the song, which was debunked by former Shondells keyboardist and backing vocalist Kenny Laguna. Gentry had co-written some previous Shondells tracks, including \u201cMony Mony,\u201d but stopped working with their record company, Roulette, over a payment disagreement.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: left;\">Joan Jett, whose longtime producer and manager is Laguna, would later cover \u201cCrimson and Clover,\u201d and release the song on her second album I Love Rock \u2019n Roll in 1981; the song reached No. 7 on the Hot 100 chart for Jett.
